Commander is a format that is very diverse. You pick out a general, throw together your most synergistic 99 cards and go for the gusto. To get the most fun out of the deck you’re probably going to want a multi-colored general. With that comes the need for mana fixing. This list is of my top mana fixers that can pretty much fit in any multi-colored commander deck. Lots of them are cheap to acquire too because…that’s how I roll. Check it.
At the bottom of the list we have Journeyer’s Kite. This is a fairly slow but re-usable way to fix mana. In most commander games that I’ve played, the decks are very midrangey which gives you time to use an activation or two of Journeyer’s Kite while you figure out what drops you’re looking to play. Though it can get any basic land that you need which is very good, I’ve put it at the bottom of the list due to the large mana requirement and generally slow speed.
Next we have the Diamonds from Mirage. Sky Diamond, Moss Diamond, Charcoal Diamond, Niel Diamond, Fire Diamond and Marble Diamond. For 2 mana you get an artifact that enters the battlefield tapped and taps for a mana of a particular color. These may not be the fastest way to get mana fixed but they are still very good. You essentially get a delayed 1 mana ramp. That’s not too bad at all. Most commander decks that I make include some of these for nostalgia since Mirage is right around the time I started playing Magic. They’re cheap and can easily fit into any commander deck.
At number 8 we have Expedition Map. The benefits of Expedition Map are that you can search it up with Trinket Mage (always an important benefit for me) and that it gets ANY land. This allows you to get your best situational land at any time. You need a Ravnica bounce land for some ramp? Go and get it! What about a Command Tower to fill some color holes? Go and get it! How about getting that Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion to swing for mega beats? I didn’t stutter muh fugga GO AND GET IT! Expedition Map is a very strong inclusion in any commander deck and at common it’s easy to obtain.
At 7 we have Gilded Lotus. I took a little time to think about where exactly to put this one. It’s a great mana fixer and ramp card. The reason it’s not higher on the list is the 5 mana cost. 5 seems like that teetering number right above that magic number 4. It’s not cheap enough to be too insane but when you have it out it definitely makes an impact. Add in some shenanigans with a Voltaic Key or Seedborn Muse and you’re sure to pull ahead in the mana race in no time.
Number 6 is filled by Darksteel Ingot. 3 mana for an indestructible artifact that produces any color mana. Not bad. Not bad at all. This could easily be higher on the list but I haven’t played with it as much to compare it to the cards that I constantly use and enjoy. It’s clearly a great mana fixer that is very versatile and for that it gets the 6 spot.
The middle of the list is occupied by our only creature on the list. Solemn Simulacrum fits in any commander deck that likes having land and cards….which is every deck ever. At 4 mana you instantly get a 2/2 with a Rampant Growth. But that’s not all. When he dies you get to draw a card. Yeeuh. He’s always going to maintain a decent value because he’s such a good card, but definitely consider Solemn Simulacrum when you’re looking for some fixing.
At number 4 we have the Borderposts. Firewild Borderpost, Wildfield Borderpost, Fieldmist Borderpost, Mistvein Borderpost and Veinfire Borderpost. And I just realized while writing this article that they all use the same color specific words for the names which is pretty awesome. Fire, wild, field, mist, vein. Neat! Anyhow, I have these so high on the list because I think they’re awesome! It’s like a diamond only it taps for 2 colors. Think of it as another land. Most of the time you’re going to want to play it for its alternate cost which is what makes it so good. They’re common, they’re cheap and they’re good.
Now we’re getting to the top 3. Here we have the signets from the Ravnica block. There are 10 of them so I’m not going to name them here. 😛 They all cost 2 mana and filter 1 mana into 2 colored mana. They’re amazing for mana fixing. They diversify your mana base by the third turn which is very fast for a colorless cost mana fixer. Even the creators of the cards say that the cards are too good and that it was a mistake that they won’t make again. That means put them in your deck and use them! They’re common, they’re awesome and you should be using them!
At the deuce slot (which is another name for ass crack) is Armillary Sphere, one of the best mana fixing cards available for commander. At 2 mana to cast and 2 to activate you’re not going to be hurting to make use of it. It gets 2 basic lands which will more than likely fix any mana problems that you had previously. Think about if you have a 3 colored deck for instance which I think is about the average. You have 2 mana of 1 color to play the Armillary Sphere and you’re able to search for the other 2 colors needed to play your deck. I put it so high on the list because it provides 2 seperate lands. Not all of your eggs are in one basket and it’s beast. At common, they’re super easy to get. Use it and win.
Numero uno belongs to my favorite mana fixer Coalition Relic. At 3 mana it can instantly tap for any colored mana. The second ability on the card is what makes it so awesome though. You basically tap it one turn for mana the next turn. So if you play it on turn 3, you can tap to add the counter and on turn 4, assuming you hit your land drops, you’re at 6 mana with at least 3 color options. So good. And if you just want to play it safe, you can only use the mana from the charge counter to keep the relic available to tap for that extra clutch mana. And since it puts counters on itself you can use shenanigans to duplicate or add more charge counters to get more mana. If you’ve never used Coalition Relic before, sell your favorite mana fixer and buy one of these. You’ll be glad you did.
You probably thought that the list was done. Well you thought wrong. I tried to publish this list without adding this card and the card added itself to the list. Then I deleted it and it readded and threatened to stab me if I deleted it again. So now the best mana fixer ever in the history of all games ever made has decided to rear its beasty head. Mox Lotus. At the cost of an Emrakul, The Aeons Torn is the mana fixer to end all mana fixers. It taps for infinite and only costs 100 mana to filter into 1 mana of any color. And if you have Voltaic Key you can tap for double infinite! Filigree Sages makes it so you can tap for infinite infinite mana!!!! And what do you do with infinite infinite mana? You drop a million of it on a fuckin Gleemax and tell your opponents to eat it!
Nice choices. for me Solumn is the best though.
Actually for me mana fixers are land search cards. I find it's usually more effective long term then having any of these
