For the cards that have been shown as of 2012-06-12 here are a few that I am excited about. Some are reprints and some are new. Lets jump into it…
Oblivion Ring
I want that this card becomes a staple in the core set. I think Wizard’s made a huge mistake by not having this around when CawBlade was running around. It would have been an excellent answer to Jace, Stoneforge, Batterskull, Gideon, etc… If this was around no cards would have been banned….probably. Anyway, on to the future! This is a nice catch all card that fits easily in a lot of decks. Hope this time it stays around longer or just never leaves us again.
Talrand’s Invocation
This is no Lingering Souls but a blue/flying Moan of the Unhallowed without the Flashback, obviously. In limited this card will be first pickable. In constructed it probably wont see play but I wouldn’t be surprised if it happen to make it in a deck at some point. Either way a two for one in a core set with flying is awesome. Cant wait to draft 1 to 3 of these in a deck.
Murder
A card that is self explanatory, kill any creature with no drawback. At common I know this will go into the Pauper cube and be a top pick in M13 Limited. I like the name but I am surprised Wizards chose to use it.
Vampire Nighthawk
What a house! This guy was considered the TOP pick in Zendikar draft (along with Trusty Machete) since all the games were pretty fast, the lifelink, deathtouch, and 3 toughness were all extremely relevant. 5 years ago Nighthawk would have been printed rare but since hes not, take all the ones you see in Draft and stomp your opponent. This guy saw Constructed play as well and I am sure he will again when he gets printed. He works well with….
Vampire Nocturnus
The Vampire King…thank you, thank you very much. Vampire’s were a fringe Constructed deck when this card was first out and it will probably be that way again. At first thought I was thinking that this works well with Bloodline Keeper but Danny Quinn informed me that they will probably be fighting for the same slot. After sitting on it for a while I would say I will agree with that, although they are both very powerful but in different ways. Vampire Nocturnus can win the game when you cast him if you have the right card on top while Bloodline Keeper can grind out an opponent in a stale mate.
Chandra’s Fury
I like this card for two reasons. 1) Cant wait to get it a foil one in to the pauper cube and 2) I want to blow out an opponent in a draft with this card. Wail of the Nim was really good and this is very similar in that you can attack or block and make your opponents choices just bad when you show them this. I call this a Nate card…it has Chandra on it, costs more than 4, and takes a dump on your opponent.
Smelt
A one mana, red, kill any artifact spell that’s Instant. FINALLY, a Red Oxidize! Should be in sideboards for most if not all formats. Love the flavor text as well, sounds like Koth is a smart ass.
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker
While Karn Liberated is better in my opinion, he wont be around forever. This is a fair replacement as not everyone playing ramp can play it. I never actually played this card when it was legal before but I did play against it and lost to it the 3 times it resolved. I am definitely going to make up for lost time when it becomes legal again.
Tormod’s Crypt
The original graveyard hate card. Glad to see them revive it since 2006 (The 2008 FNM Promo was sick looking). I have a set of them from The Dark but I could always use a Foil set too. After Nihil Spellbomb rotates, we will all be using this against the Reanimator decks that will be running around in October.
