Never Get Mana Screwed Again! – 1 Drop Deck – Black

After sitting bored for an unknown amount of time, I decided to whip out the ol’ Magic collection and try my hand at a new concoction. Winning wasn’t really the thing that I was concerned about. The goal for this deck was going to be to never be able to truly be mana screwed. How could I go about that? Make a mono colored deck where everything costs 1 mana.

The original idea for the deck was to have it be pauper and the best one drops that I could think of that I had on hand were Vampire Lacerator and Pulse Tracker. They put some good early pressure on with the damages. Those two creatures alone made the decision to make the deck black. But after the deck lost game after game in playtesting against mediocre decks I had to up the ante to any rarity of one drops.

Upon looking through my collection further I found a nice suite of removal to back up the squishy creatures. Disfigure, Executioner’s Capsule, Ghastly Demise, Innocent Blood and Tragic Slip are the backbone of the deck. Without removing the creatures from the way of my tiny wave of chump creatures the deck couldn’t possibly come close to winning.

After looking through every black one drop that I had available and playtesting against some other casual decks that I have laying around, I came to this list. Keep in mind that these are all cards that I already owned and had readily available.

  • 13 Swamp
  • 4 Vampire Lacerator
  • 3 Pulse Tracker
  • 4 Fume Spitter
  • 4 Mortician Beetle
  • 2 Carrion Feeder
  • 2 Death’s Shadow
  • 1 Carnophage
  • 1 Kjeldoran Dead
  • 1 Plagued Rusalka
  • 4 Disfigure
  • 4 Tragic Slip
  • 3 Innocent Blood
  • 2 Bone Splinters
  • 2 Ghastly Demise
  • 1 Executioner’s Capsule
  • 1 Ostracize
  • 3 Unearth
  • 1 Sylvok Lifestaff
  • 4 Flayer Husk

Since there are so many spells, the deck has a sort of virtual card advantage. If you open a game with 2 lands in your hand you’re pretty much set for the entire game. If you compare the land count in comparison to a normal deck you’re basically running 10+ extra cards!

The deck also has some good interactions. Mortician Beetle is very good in this deck. Think about how good Innocent Blood becomes. “Sure, I’ll pay one mana and a germ token from my Flayer Husk to kill one of your creatures and give my creature a permanent +2/+2! Sounds like fun! And after that’s all said and done I’ll Tragic Slip your effing Blightsteel Colossus!!!!!! Eat it.”

Some other cards that are deceptively good are Ghastly Demise and Unearth. Ghastly Demise will almost always be able to kill anything that you want it to due to the amount of spells in the deck. Unearth gives you back any creature in the deck! It’s a 1 mana Zombify with cycling. How good is that? Very.

Overall, the deck is a lot of fun to play with. The idea of the deck still being very budget friendly and able to keep up with decent decks makes me feel good inside every time I play it. Try your hand at some 1 drop decks and leave your list in the comment section below.
